CS Justin Muturi has confirmed that the Democratic Party of Kenya has issued a notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, which relevant authorities have acknowledged. He remarked that the party managed to make this decision independently. The notice indicates that the party’s involvement is untenable due to political developments.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has confirmed that the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), which he is affiliated with, has issued a notice to terminate its membership in the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. During a recent interview on Citizen TV, he asserted that the party is free to make decisions without needing to notify him beforehand.

The DP officially announced its exit from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance by issuing a 30-day notice, which was acknowledged by the Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu. Muturi mentioned that he learned about the notice only after it was filed.

He stated, “I just saw the letter also; whether I am okay with it or not, it is a decision that has been made by an organ of the party that I believe it is authorised to make the decision.” Muturi joined the Kenya Kwanza alliance through the DP in May 2022, when the party became an integral member of the coalition.

The official correspondence indicated that the party’s involvement with Kenya Kwanza was no longer feasible due to current political changes. DP’s Secretary General, Dr. Jacob Haji, signed the notice dated March 7, expressing the party’s intention to exit the coalition based on the stipulations of the termination clause in the coalition agreement.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has no legal grounds to deny a political party’s exit from a coalition if a proper notice is provided. The notice was forwarded to the chairperson of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat and shared with the secretaries general of other coalition counterparts, including Ford Kenya, UDA, and Maendeleo Chap Chap, with DP’s Chairperson Esau Kioni co-signing the document.

In summary, the Democratic Party of Kenya, under the leadership of Justin Muturi, has decided to terminate its membership in the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. This decision was formalized through a 30-day notice submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties. Muturi confirmed that he was not informed prior to this decision but acknowledged that the party’s management is empowered to take such actions without prior approval. The legal framework allows for this departure, highlighting the party’s autonomy.
