Nigeria’s Lawmakers Propose Ban on Adult Content Websites

The Nigerian House of Representatives has proposed a ban on adult content websites, urging the NCC to direct ISPs to block access immediately. Sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, the motion cites the growing global concern of adult content and its detrimental effects on societal values. The House has directed its committees to ensure implementation and compliance by ISPs will be monitored and penalized as necessary.

In Nigeria, lawmakers have initiated a motion to prohibit access to adult content websites. The motion, sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a representative from the All Progressives Congress, emphasizes the need for immediate action against the growing global issue of adult content influence. The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block such content, underlining compliance with the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act.

During the motion’s presentation, Mr. Tafoki highlighted Nigeria’s religious stance against obscenity, noting that all major religions in the country condemn nudity and pornography. He referenced similar legislative measures taken by various countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to curb this issue. Tafoki also warned of the psychological impacts of adult content, such as addiction and a potential shift in social values, linking it to increased rates of promiscuity, adultery, and prostitution.

The motion received unanimous support during a voice vote, leading the House to assign its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance the task of monitoring the implementation of the ban and providing a report within four weeks. Speaker Tajudeen Abass reaffirmed the importance of adherence to this law, cautioning that ISPs that do not comply would face appropriate sanctions.
