Eduardo Cerro Godinho, the former Spanish ambassador to Paraguay and Ecuador, passed away at the age of 83. This news was confirmed last week by Cuban entrepreneur Miguel Ángel Alvelo Céspedes, a personal friend of Mr. Cerro, through the digital newspaper Crónicas de la Emigración.

Eduardo Cerro was born on September 26, 1941, in Barcelona. He earned a degree in Law and joined the Spanish Diplomatic Service in 1968. Throughout his career, he served in various diplomatic posts including assignments in Addis Ababa, Paris, and Peru, as well as at Spain’s permanent representation to the Organization of American States and United Nations agencies in Geneva.

In 1985, Mr. Cerro was appointed deputy director general of the Office of Diplomatic Information and became the Spanish ambassador to Paraguay in 1987, holding the position until 1993. Afterward, he served as consul general in Havana before being appointed ambassador to Ecuador from 1997 to 2001. In 2008, he earned the rank of First Class Plenipotentiary Ambassador, proposed by then-Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Ángel Moratinos, before serving as Consul General in Argentina from 2008 to 2010.

The passing of Eduardo Cerro Godinho marks the loss of a distinguished diplomat who contributed significantly to Spanish diplomacy in Latin America. His career spanned several important roles, from ambassadorial positions to high-level diplomatic offices, reflecting his dedication to public service.
