Uganda Aims for 1.5GW Geothermal Power Capacity Investment

Uganda has allocated $43 million for early exploration of geothermal power at two sites in the Great Rift Valley, aiming for a capacity of 1.5 GW to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on hydroelectric power.
Uganda is making significant strides toward expanding its energy sources by targeting a geothermal power capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW). The government has allocated $43 million for preliminary exploration at two prospective sites located in the Great Rift Valley, which are anticipated to be viable for geothermal energy production. This initiative reflects Uganda’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and decreasing reliance on hydroelectric power resources.
Uganda’s strategic initiative to invest in geothermal energy illustrates its proactive approach to energy diversification. By allocating substantial funds for exploration, the government aims to tap into the country’s geothermal potential, thereby enhancing energy security and reducing dependence on hydroelectric sources.
