Brazil Denounces U.S. Tariff Increases on Steel and Aluminum as Unjustified

On March 13, 2025, Brazil’s government expressed strong opposition to the U.S. decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 25 percent, labeling it an “unjustified and mistaken” action. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry, alongside the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade, indicated that this tariff increase would severely affect Brazilian exports, which reached approximately 3.2 billion USD in 2024.
Brazilian officials emphasized that the tariff hike is unwarranted, highlighting the deep economic cooperation and integration that exists between the United States and Brazil. Brazil is notably the third-largest importer of U.S. steelmaking coal and the leading exporter of semifinished steel to the U.S., underlining the interdependent trade relationship.
The U.S. has enjoyed a persistent trade surplus with Brazil, which amounted to about 7 billion USD in goods in 2024. In response to this recent tariff decision, Brazilian authorities announced their intention to evaluate all possible trade actions in the coming weeks to mitigate the adverse effects of the tariffs and safeguard the country’s legitimate national interests.
