Ethiopia’s Commitment to Refugees and Asylum-Seekers Amid Ongoing Conflicts

Ethiopia is the third-largest refugee-hosting country in Africa with over 1 million refugees, mainly from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. Since the onset of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, many more displaced individuals have entered the country. The government has initiated the issuance of digital identity documents for refugees to promote their inclusion in the national system.
Ethiopia stands as the third largest host of refugees in Africa, accommodating over one million individuals seeking asylum, primarily from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. The situation has further intensified following the escalation of armed conflict in Sudan in April 2023, resulting in Ethiopia receiving a significant influx of forcibly displaced individuals at various entry points.
As part of a progressive initiative, on March 6, 2024, the Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) of Ethiopia, in collaboration with the National ID Program (NIDP) and UNHCR, commenced the distribution of digital identity documents. This initiative aims to promote the inclusion of refugees within the national system, thereby contributing to their integration and access to essential services.
In conclusion, Ethiopia continues to play a crucial role in hosting a substantial number of refugees and asylum seekers, particularly in light of recent conflicts in neighboring regions. The introduction of digital identity documents enhances the government’s efforts to integrate these individuals into the national framework, fostering their inclusion and access to services.
