Former President Obasanjo Critiques Nigerian Leadership, Proposes New Governance Model

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo criticizes the current political system and President Bola Tinubu’s administration as corrupt and ineffective. He advocates for a reconsideration of governance approaches, proposing ‘Afrodemocracy’ as a more suitable alternative to Western liberal democracy, reflecting Africa’s unique history and culture. This discussion is elaborated in his new book, ‘Nigeria: Past and Future.’
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria has asserted that the nation must reconsider its political structure, positing that Western liberal democracy is failing to satisfy the country’s needs. He criticized the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, labeling its policies as corrupt and wasteful. Moreover, Obasanjo described numerous leaders, both past and present, as ‘ill-prepared, satanic, and self-centered,’ focusing on personal gain at the expense of national progress.
In his recently published book, “Nigeria: Past and Future,” released during his 88th birthday festivities, Obasanjo identified the practice among some governors and presidents of securing significant loans prior to taking office. He expressed concern over their subsequent ability to repay these debts from public resources, stating, “How do you explain the situation of a governor who owed billions before election, yet within two years in office, without running any business, he cleared all his debts?”
Further into his critique, Obasanjo condemned specific government projects, notably the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway initiative, which he labeled an “example of misplaced priorities and corruption.” He remarked, “Typical examples of waste and corruption include the murky Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, on which the President has turned deaf ears to protests.” Additionally, he denounced the construction of a new Vice President’s residence at a cost of N21 billion amid economic difficulties, questioning the priorities of leadership during times of hardship.
Obasanjo emphasized the necessity for an alternative political model, introducing the concept of ‘Afrodemocracy,’ which he believes could better accommodate Africa’s distinctive history, culture, and governance requirements. He concluded with a call for introspection, noting, “If the West, where liberal democracy originated, complains about its flaws, then we should be wise enough to introspect and develop a system that works for Africa.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has directly criticized the state of Nigerian leadership and the effectiveness of Western democracy in the country. He emphasizes the need for Nigeria to rethink its political system, advocating for an Afrocentric model that can cater to the unique needs of the nation. Through his insights, he challenges current leadership practices and urges a departure from ineffective governance to foster progress in Nigeria.
