Frelimo Urges Increased Support for Cyclone Jude Victims in Mozambique

Frelimo has requested the Mozambican government to bolster assistance for victims affected by Cyclone Jude, which has caused six fatalities and large-scale disruptions in various provinces. The cyclone has resulted in injuries and affected numerous schools and students, exacerbating the existing difficulties posed by extreme weather events in the region.

The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) has urged the government to enhance support for victims impacted by Tropical Cyclone Jude. The cyclone struck Mozambique on Monday, resulting in the loss of six lives. Ludmila Maguni, Frelimo’s Political Commission spokesperson, emphasized the need for increased assistance from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) and reinforced the importance of implementing security measures for the affected communities.

According to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), Cyclone Jude has injured 20 individuals and affected approximately 9,525 citizens in the provinces of Nampula, Niassa, and Zambézia. Furthermore, 17,401 students, 264 teachers, and numerous educational facilities have been impacted. Initially, the cyclone exhibited winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 195 kilometers per hour upon its entry into Mozambique.

Manuel Francisco, a meteorologist at the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), noted that the cyclone subsequently weakened into a severe tropical storm and is expected to fluctuate between moderate and severe conditions in the upcoming days. The cyclone coincides with Mozambique’s rainy season, which spans from October to April, during which other recent cyclones have already devastated regions, particularly Cabo Delgado and Nampula.

The cyclones that occurred between December and January affected around 736,000 individuals and resulted in extensive damage to infrastructure. Extreme weather events in Mozambique have led to at least 1,016 fatalities and affected nearly 4.9 million people from 2019 to 2023, as indicated by data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The country continues to combat challenges posed by global climate change, facing recurrent floods and droughts during the rainy season.
