Ghana’s Minister Plans Support for Deportees’ Reintegration

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced plans to support the reintegration of deportees, collaborating with NADMO and other stakeholders to provide training and psychological assistance. The deported individuals do not pose any threat to national security, and the US government will cover deportation costs. The effort aims to ensure that returning Ghanaians can contribute positively to their communities.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced the ministry’s plans to facilitate the reintegration of deportees into society upon their return to Ghana. During a parliamentary address on March 13, 2025, he revealed that his ministry is collaborating with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other stakeholders to implement support initiatives for the deported individuals.

Ablakwa highlighted several options being considered for the deportees, including skills training and a variety of supportive measures. He stated, “The Ministry is in discussion with NADMO and other partners, including the International Organisation for Migration, to extend support in reintegration and providing additional sources of livelihood to our compatriots upon arrival.”

Additionally, psychological support will be offered to help individuals adjust and integrate back into society, countering any feelings of alienation due to their experiences. He mentioned, “Options include arranging skills training, microfinancing opportunities, and psychological support to help individuals reintegrate into society and rebuild their livelihoods.”

Furthermore, Ablakwa assured Parliament that the individuals to be deported, numbering around 150, pose no threats to national security, addressing concerns surrounding their criminal records. He emphasized, “These are hardworking, decent people,” reiterating the government’s commitment to safeguarding the deportees’ dignity during their reintegration.

Importantly, the Minister noted that the US government is covering the cost of deportation for these individuals. To ensure a successful reintegration process, the ministry will coordinate with local authorities and communities, allowing deportees to contribute constructively to their communities.
