Iraq and Ooredoo Group Finalize FIG Submarine Cable Agreement to Enhance Connectivity

The Iraqi Ministry of Communications has contracted with Ooredoo Group to install the FIG submarine cable to boost internet capacity by over 700 terabytes. This 2,000-kilometer cable will enhance Iraq’s connectivity to Europe and the Gulf. The project is projected to be completed by 2027, reinforcing Iraq’s strategic role in the telecommunications sector.
The Ministry of Communications in Iraq has signed a contract with Ooredoo Group of Qatar for the installation of the FIG submarine cable. Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri noted that this initiative aims to enhance the revenues of the state and to expand the country’s internet capacity substantially.
The contract, which establishes Iraq’s fourth submarine cable, includes a 2,000-kilometer cable with 24 pairs of optical fibers. It will enable internet throughput exceeding 700 terabytes while facilitating connections from Iraq to Europe via Turkey. Completion of the project is anticipated by 2027.
Al-Yasiri emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy that will reinforce Iraq’s status as a critical regional connectivity corridor. She remarked that such developments not only boost state revenues but also enhance economic stability by attracting international investments.
Nasser bin Hamad Nasser Al Thani, Ooredoo Group’s CEO, expressed pride in this partnership, highlighting the group’s commitment to the Iraqi market. He underscored Iraq’s pivotal geographical location which presents significant advantages in telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
Al Thani further pointed out that the partnership encompasses not just submarine cables but also prospective collaborations with leading global firms like Microsoft and Google.
