Japan Provides Zambia $1.2 Million Grant for Enhanced Mineral Analysis

Japan has granted Zambia approximately 1.2 million USD for laboratory equipment at the Geological Survey Department, aimed at improving mineral analysis and geological data. The initiative, praised by both Japanese and Zambian officials, is expected to accelerate mining activities, enhance revenues, and reduce poverty. The grant also follows previous support for Human Resource Development, with officials having studied in Japan.

Japan has extended financial assistance of approximately 1.2 million United States dollars (K33.6 million) to Zambia, aimed at enhancing laboratory equipment at the Geological Survey Department within the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development. The two nations have formalized this aid by signing and exchanging notes for the provision of Mineral Analysis Instruments under the Economic and Social Development Programme.

During the signing ceremony held in Lusaka, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, Takeuchi Kazuyuki, emphasized that this grant is designed to elevate the capacity for mineral analysis and modernize geological data. Mr. Kazuyuki expressed that the initiative is anticipated to speed up exploration and mining activities, ultimately aiding in increasing national tax revenues and alleviating poverty.

In support of this initiative, Minister of Finance, Situmbeko Musokotwane, highlighted that the grant will facilitate the acquisition of cutting-edge mining equipment. He noted that the improved capabilities of the Geological Survey Department will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of geological surveys, which will, in turn, attract further investments in the mining sector.

Additionally, the Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tateyama Jotaro, shared that this grant is a continuation of their support, which also encompasses Human Resource Development. He noted the successful completion of studies in Japan by seven officials and researchers from the Ministry of Mines, marking a vital component of this collaborative effort.
