Liberian Diaspora Organization Endorses Vice President Koung for 2029 Election

The ULAA has endorsed Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung for the 2029 presidential election, breaking with tradition. The Vice President has not confirmed his candidacy, and concerns about corruption linger as President Boakai urges caution among his administration.

The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) has endorsed Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung for the 2029 presidential election, a move contrary to the organization’s tradition. ULAA President, Mr. Mohamed ‘MSG1’ Keita, announced this endorsement during a Town Hall Meeting in Philadelphia, following a petition presentation regarding immigration issues for Liberians in the U.S. Keita stated, “Remember 2029 is coming, if you are ready, we are ready!”.

Although Vice President Koung has not publicly declared his intention to run, his support appears to be growing among diaspora Liberians. The upcoming elections in October 2029 will see the election of new lawmakers, a President, and a Vice President in Liberia. This endorsement marks a departure from ULAA’s usual practice of remaining neutral in electoral matters.

ULAA seeks to collaborate with every Liberian administration to benefit both its diaspora members and the Liberian populace at large. Prior to his endorsement, Keita had raised concerns regarding corruption in the Liberian government and immigration challenges faced by diaspora Liberians. During the meeting, Vice President Koung did not address Keita’s endorsement directly but acknowledged the existence of corruption as a significant issue for the government.

The Vice President’s lack of response to the endorsement may reflect the caution advised by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who urged his Executive Branch members to resign if they are focused on the 2029 elections. “If your focus is on 2029, you may respectfully resign. My priority is serving the Liberian people right now,” the President stated in a recent Cabinet Meeting.

The ULAA’s endorsement of Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung for the 2029 presidency signifies a notable shift in the organization’s traditionally neutral stance.
