Doctors Without Borders (MSF) criticized the UN Security Council for its indifference towards the ongoing crisis in Sudan, where nearly two years of conflict has led to devastating humanitarian consequences. MSF Secretary General Christopher Lockyear outlined the suffering endured by millions and condemned the ineffective responses of Security Council members. The charity has had to suspend operations in affected areas, highlighting urgent needs for protection and humanitarian assistance.

At the United Nations Security Council meeting, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) condemned the international community’s indifference towards the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, which has persisted for nearly two years. The organization highlighted the suffering of the Sudanese people during this time, characterized by violence, displacement, and numerous fatalities.

According to MSF Secretary General Christopher Lockyear, since the conflict escalated in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, the situation has deteriorated significantly, leading to widespread devastation. He emphasized that the ongoing conflict represents an assault on civilians, whose suffering has only intensified.

In his remarks, Lockyear criticized the Security Council for its ineffective responses, labeling its calls for ceasefires as insubstantial. He pointed out that while discussions occur at the Council, civilians continue to face dire circumstances without adequate protection, support, or basic human rights.

Due to the severe conditions caused by the sustained violence, MSF was compelled to halt operations in the Zamzam internally displaced persons (IDP) camp, where famine has become an overwhelming issue. Lockyear expressed that the Council’s failure to translate its words into concrete actions feels like a betrayal, condemning the affected communities to ongoing suffering.

In summary, MSF’s address to the United Nations Security Council underscores the urgent need for effective action in response to the protracted humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The organization’s leaders emphasize the detrimental impact of inaction on civilians and the necessity for the global community to prioritize the protection and assistance of those affected by the ongoing conflict.
