The MTN CHAMPS Benin Athletics Classics commenced on Thursday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and UNIBEN Sports Complex, gathering over 2,000 athletes representing various schools, teams, and states. Notable performances were highlighted by Team MTN’s Benjamin Magaji, who clocked an impressive 48.23 seconds in the senior men’s 400m heats, achieving a new personal best. Emmanuel Baraburu and Emmanuel Salubi followed closely with times of 48.27 seconds and 48.53 seconds, respectively.
In the junior women’s category, Miracle Sonny shone by securing the fastest overall time in the U20 women’s 400m at a personal best of 54.92 seconds. Victoria Olaniyi and Success Okoro placed second and third overall, recording times of 55.62 seconds and 55.92 seconds. Meanwhile, Gafar Badmus led the junior men’s 400m with a season’s best of 47.94 seconds, ensuring his place in the upcoming finals.
Elizabeth Olumide and Team MTN’s Chizoba Onyemauwa emerged as the fastest qualifiers in the youth girls’ 400m, while Emmanuel Chukwueweniwe and his teammates topped the youth boys’ category. Mmesoma Ezeobi led the junior women’s 100m semis with a time of 11.88 seconds, narrowly ahead of Miracle Ezechukwu at 11.89 seconds. Caleb John showcased his prowess in the junior men’s semis, achieving a season-best of 10.59 seconds.
MTN CHAMPS MVP Adaeze Ezeh impressed in the junior women’s long jump, securing victory with a leap of 6.05 meters. The finals for the 100m and 400m across all age categories will be critical highlights as the competition continues through March 15th.
