Nigerian Lawmakers Approve President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills

The Nigerian House of Representatives approved President Tinubu’s tax reform bills after months of debate and controversy. Spokesperson Sunday Dare confirmed the approval, which came despite opposition from the Northern Governors’ Forum and the National Economic Council regarding certain provisions of the tax bills introduced in October 2024.
The Nigerian House of Representatives has successfully approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform bills, concluding a period of extensive debate. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare announced the news via his official X account, confirming the passage of these bills on March 13, 2025.
This legislative approval follows significant controversy surrounding the proposed reforms. Notably, the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the National Economic Council have expressed opposition, particularly towards the value-added tax derivation model outlined in the Nigeria Tax Bill.
On October 3, 2024, President Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly. These include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, all aimed at overhauling the country’s tax system.
The recent approval of President Tinubu’s tax reform bills by the Nigerian House of Representatives marks a significant development in the country’s tax policy. Despite facing opposition from regional governors and economic councils, the passage highlights the administration’s commitment to restructuring Nigeria’s tax framework. Continuing dialogue may be necessary to address the concerns raised during the legislative process.
