Qatar Initiates Natural Gas Supply to Syria to Address Electricity Crisis
Qatar has commenced the supply of natural gas to Syria via Jordan to alleviate electricity shortages. This initiative, involving collaboration with Jordan and the United Nations Development Programme, will initially generate 400 megawatts of electricity daily, benefiting cities across Syria and addressing humanitarian needs in the region.
Qatar has initiated the supply of natural gas to Syria via Jordan to help mitigate the ongoing electricity shortages and frequent power outages faced by the country. As announced by the state news agency QNA, this effort is part of a collaboration between Qatar, Jordan, and the United Nations Development Programme, formalized in a recent agreement.
Under this agreement, Qatar will provide natural gas that will facilitate the generation of 400 megawatts of electricity daily, with plans to gradually increase production at the Deir Ali power plant in Syria. The electricity generated will be distributed across multiple cities including Damascus, Rif Dimashq, As Suwayda, Daraa, Al Qunaitra, Homs, Hama, Tartous, Latakia, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zur.
Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti, director of the Qatar Fund for Development, remarked, “This initiative represents a pivotal step towards meeting the Syrian people’s energy needs and reflects a shared commitment among all parties to work together for the benefit of the region.” This support comes at a crucial time as Syria’s interim authorities have faced significant challenges in providing electricity following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad in December, during which much of the country’s infrastructure has been severely impacted by years of conflict.
Historically, Damascus relied on oil supplies from Iran for power generation; however, these supplies have been disrupted since the change in leadership. This new initiative by Qatar is expected to alleviate some of these energy shortages and support rebuilding efforts in the country.
