The Mozambique Recovery Mechanism (MRF) is facilitating the reconstruction of Macomia following Cyclone Kenneth in 2019. Key projects include the rehabilitation of public infrastructure, health services, and education facilities, driving sustainable recovery and enhanced living conditions for the local population. The UNDP plays a vital role in these efforts, backed by various national and international partners.

Macomia, significantly impacted by Cyclone Kenneth in 2019, is undergoing reconstruction with support from the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism (MRF). This initiative focuses on rebuilding essential infrastructure to enhance resilience and improve living conditions for the local population, ensuring a sustainable recovery.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been instrumental in Mozambique’s post-disaster recovery efforts, particularly after the devastation caused by Cyclones Idai, Kenneth, and Freddy. These disasters incurred substantial destruction, loss of lives, and the displacement of thousands, notably affecting Zambézia Province and Cabo Delgado Province, where Macomia is located. Following these events, the MRF was established to support the sustainable recovery of impacted communities.

In Macomia, MRF’s efforts include the rehabilitation of government infrastructure, essential health services, educational facilities, and water systems. Notable projects include the revitalization of the District Services for Planning and Infrastructure (SDPI) Building, which now features solar power and improved security and serves over 30,000 residents. The Macomia Police Station enhances local security, while the Attorney Building improves access to justice for over 138,000 individuals.

Rebuilding infrastructure extends to the educational sector with new classrooms at local schools, thus expanding access to education, while healthcare services are improved through the rehabilitation of the Macomia Maternity Ward and Health Center, which collectively assist thousands of individuals.

The MRF continues to foster positive developments in community recovery. Special gratitude is expressed to funding partners, particularly the European Union and other nations, namely Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, India, and China, for their essential contributions to these recovery efforts.

In conclusion, the reconstruction initiatives in Macomia, led by the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism and supported by the UNDP, are aimed at building a more resilient community. Through various projects focusing on infrastructure, security, and essential services, significant strides have been made to enhance living conditions. Continued partnerships and funding will be crucial for sustaining recovery efforts in the region.
