Renew Europe Group Condemns Atrocities Against Women and Children in Sudan
The Renew Europe Group condemns the rampant sexual violence in Sudan’s conflict, urging targeted sanctions against responsible parties and increased humanitarian aid. UNICEF reports that 12.1 million individuals face gender-based violence, with numerous child victims. The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament has issued a strong condemnation regarding the mass sexual violence perpetrated during the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This violence, employed as a weapon of war, disproportionately affects women and children. The group calls upon the Council to implement targeted measures and sanctions against responsible entities and commanders for severe human rights violations.
According to UNICEF, an alarming 12.1 million individuals are at risk of gender-based violence in Sudan. There have been 221 reported cases of rape involving children since last year, with 16 victims being under the age of five. Such statistics underscore the urgent need for action to protect vulnerable populations.
In a resolution adopted by the plenary, the group has urged the European Union and its Member States to back the International Criminal Court’s investigations into genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Furthermore, it advocates for increased humanitarian assistance for Sudan and its neighboring countries, along with funding dedicated to survivors of sexual violence.
It is imperative for all parties engaged in this conflict to facilitate safe and unfettered access to humanitarian actors, including the World Food Programme, as approximately two-thirds of Sudan’s population remains at substantial risk.
MEP Hilde Vautmans has highlighted the societal devastation caused by sexual violence, stating, “Sexual violence shatters the very foundations of a society and reduces a country—entire generations—to ruins.” She emphasizes the need for Europe to acknowledge its responsibility in addressing these atrocities and calls for immediate action towards ceasing hostilities in Sudan.
