Starlink Launches in Niger, Boosting Internet Connectivity in Africa

Starlink has launched in Niger, marking the 18th African country to gain access to its satellite internet service. This follows its earlier launch in Liberia in January 2025 and is part of a broader expansion plan to secure operations across 18 new African markets. The launch aims to boost internet connectivity where penetration currently sits at 32%.
Starlink, a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, has officially launched its operations in Niger, becoming the 18th African nation to access this service. This launch follows its introduction in Liberia earlier in January 2025, part of Starlink’s strategy to secure regulatory approvals and operate in 18 new African markets by year-end, as depicted on their availability map.
The operational license granted to Starlink in Niger spans five years, following extensive discussions with local regulatory bodies that began in the fourth quarter of 2024. This agreement, established between the military ruling junta of Niger and Starlink, aims to significantly enhance internet connectivity, given that the current internet penetration rate stands at just 32% according to the Nigerien Electronic Communications Regulation and Mail Authority (ARCEP).
Sidi Mohamed Raliou, Niger’s Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, emphasized the positive impact of Starlink’s launch, stating that “Niger will benefit from this cutting-edge, high-speed technology at a very low cost.” This initiative is poised to improve broadband accessibility, thereby aiding Niger’s digital transformation endeavors.
The successful launch of Starlink in Niger signifies a significant advancement in bridging the digital divide in the region. With a strategic plan to expand into more African markets, Starlink aims to enhance internet penetration and accessibility, thus contributing to economic growth and digital transformation in Niger and beyond.
