Syria’s Interim President Establishes National Security Council

On Wednesday, Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced the establishment of a National Security Council via a presidential decree. This council will focus on decisions pertinent to national security and the various challenges the state currently faces. Chairing the council, President al-Sharaa aims to coordinate and manage both security and political policies, a significant step as this structure did not exist under former President Bashar al-Assad.

The creation of the National Security Council coincides with the authorities’ efforts to enforce national control, disband armed factions, and commence rebuilding after an extended civil war lasting over 13 years. This initiative follows a troubling incident involving numerous executions, primarily targeting members of the Alawite minority since March 6, following assaults by pro-Assad gunmen against security forces. Reports indicate that approximately 1,400 civilians have lost their lives due to actions by security forces or allied groups.

The council’s decree expresses its purpose as enhancing national security while addressing impending security and political threats. Within the council, additional members will include ministers responsible for foreign affairs, defence, and the interior, alongside the head of the national intelligence agency. Furthermore, two advisory members and a technical expert appointed by President al-Sharaa will also be present. To facilitate ongoing dialogue, the council will convene either periodically or at the president’s discretion, with implementation of decisions occurring in consultation with all members.
