UNITEL and Ericsson Forge Ahead with Network Modernization in Angola
UNITEL and Ericsson have launched a network modernization initiative in Angola, enhancing connectivity through advanced technologies. The upgrade includes Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services vital for economic growth. UNITEL has partnered with Ericsson to initiate an advanced network modernization effort aimed at improving connectivity in Angola. This initiative is designed to enhance both Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services, critical for supporting economic development and high-speed applications with low latency.
Through the use of Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure, UNITEL’s core network has undergone a significant transformation. This innovative architecture allows for the seamless integration of 4G and 5G technologies, enabling customization of services via network slicing and improving voice and data communication over a 5G standalone network.
Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core combines Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core, providing a cloud-native, microservice-based backbone. This structure facilitates a smooth transition from older 2G and 3G voice services to 4G and 5G networks. Moreover, through IMS, UNITEL can deliver real-time communication services across multiple access networks, increasing service accessibility.
A successful trial data call was conducted on a live 5G Standalone network by Ericsson and UNITEL, highlighting the capabilities of 5G technology. This milestone signifies UNITEL’s commitment to advancing into next-generation services, including network slicing among other innovations.
Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the collaboration, stating, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country.”
The strategic upgrade will support services like Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). This modernization is poised to significantly enhance connectivity, thereby fostering economic development in Angola.
