Botswana’s boxing team secured seven medals at the 2025 Zone IV Championships in Mozambique, including two golds. Key performances from both men and women underscored the nation’s progress in boxing. A bright prospect lies ahead with further international competitions set for 2025.

Botswana’s senior national boxing team achieved significant success by securing seven medals at the 2025 Zone IV Championships held in Mozambique. Competing against five countries, Botswana’s delegation of eight fighters earned two gold medals, won by Keobakeng Philip in the 60kg category and Kobamelo Molatlhegi in the 48kg division.

In addition to the golds, Kutlwano Sekhutlo (63kg) and Gift Modise (57kg) earned silver medals after reaching their finals but falling short. Ribbin Modise, Mmoloki Sekwaipe, and Letlhogonolo Makgaola each claimed bronze medals. Notably, Dorcus Tlhabologo was unable to compete due to an injury. The performance of the women’s team, which contributed three medals, reflects the growing strength of women’s boxing in Botswana.

Botswana Boxing Association spokesperson Gaone Motshwanaesi expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “Of course, we are impressed with the development of boxers because most of them are new to the team, and they got the much-needed exposure and results.” The team’s efforts placed Botswana in second overall behind Mozambique, showcasing a better performance than the last edition where they secured six medals.

This victory comes at a crucial time as Gift Modise and Phekie Bele are preparing to compete in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2025 from March 8 to 16 in Belgrade, Serbia. The championship represents a vital opportunity for Botswana’s boxers to regain their competitive edge after not participating in notable tournaments last year due to financial constraints, such as missing the Africa Elite Boxing Championships in October 2024.

In summary, Botswana’s boxing team demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill at the 2025 Zone IV Championships, garnering seven medals including two golds. The success of the women’s division illustrates the advancement of female athletes in the sport. Moving forward, both the women’s team and the overall boxing community in Botswana look forward to future competitions after overcoming previous challenges.
