Brazil and Paraguay Initiate Operation New Alliance to Combat Drug Trafficking

Brazil and Paraguay have initiated Operation New Alliance to combat drug trafficking across their borders. This collaborative operation involves multiple agencies, focusing on the eradication of marijuana plantations using advanced operational techniques, including aerial surveillance and ground raids. A recent meeting enhanced their cooperation further, consolidating strategies for ongoing efforts against drug-related crime.
On October 10, Brazil and Paraguay commenced the 48th edition of Operation New Alliance aimed at countering drug trafficking. This operation is a collaborative effort involving several key institutions, including Brazil’s Federal Police (PF), Paraguay’s National Anti-Drug Secretariat (Senad), and military personnel from the Joint Task Force (FTC) along with agents from the Paraguayan Public Ministry.
The operational activities will utilize land vehicles and helicopters, focusing on the dry border area between Amambay in Paraguay and Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil. The primary objective of Operation New Alliance is to eliminate marijuana plantations as well as processing facilities used by drug traffickers.
A report from Senad indicates that previous executions of the operation in 2024 yielded the destruction of over 4.5 tons of marijuana, much of which was still growing, with an average yield estimated at three tons per hectare. The current phase of the operation is set to last approximately ten days, and while raids will mainly be conducted in Paraguay, the Brazilian Federal Police will provide critical maps and coordinates to target drug dens.
Furthermore, on October 12, authorities from both countries convened in Asunción to enhance cooperation efforts. Jalil Rachid, head of Senad, welcomed a delegation led by Felipe Tavares Seixas, director of International Cooperation of the PF. The meeting addressed previous achievements and coordinated plans for future operations focused on eradicating illicit crops, sharing intelligence, and strengthening capabilities.
In summary, the launch of the 48th Operation New Alliance signifies an essential collaborative effort between Brazil and Paraguay to combat drug trafficking. With a focus on eradicating marijuana plantations and improving operational strategies, this initiative aims to significantly disrupt drug-related activities in the border regions. Continued cooperation between the two nations ensures a coordinated approach to intelligence sharing and operational execution.
