The ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF in Sudan is resulting in mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis, particularly affecting areas like Khartoum and West Darfur. Violence and a collapse of healthcare services are exacerbating the situation, prompting urgent calls for humanitarian aid. Takaful community kitchens have resumed operations, but overall needs remain critical.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is intensifying, resulting in a significant humanitarian crisis. Thousands of individuals are fleeing their homes in search of safety, leading to overcrowded camps in neighboring regions, particularly in West Darfur and southern Khartoum, where local populations are facing critical challenges to survival amidst deteriorating infrastructure and healthcare services.

Recently, as hostilities escalated, many civilians departed from Khartoum, heading towards already strained camps in areas such as El Geneina, Nyala in South Darfur, and El Fula in West Kordofan. The influx of displaced individuals is overwhelming vulnerable communities in these regions, with essentials like food, shelter, and medical aid in short supply.

Violence saw a grave increase over the weekend in West Darfur, with gunfire leading to multiple civilian fatalities. Local residents are now demanding accountability for the violence, particularly urging for the apprehension of an RSF member responsible for recent attacks. The fatalities contribute to a climate of fear among the populace amid ongoing lawlessness.

The healthcare situation in South Khartoum has deteriorated substantially, with reports indicating the tragic deaths of seven pregnant women due to collapsed medical services. Clinics have been attacked, and hospitals, including Bashair Teaching Hospital, are struggling without resources or power for operation.

Compounding the crisis are severe fuel shortages, preventing healthcare facilities from delivering life-saving treatments such as dialysis, with costs skyrocketing to over SDG 40,000 per session, an amount unaffordable for most families.

Alarming reports also detail a rise in the abduction of young girls; at least 11 underage girls have vanished since May 2023 due to the increasingly perilous environment, with both RSF and SAF connections implicated in these incidents.

Despite overwhelming challenges, Takaful community kitchens in South Khartoum’s Belt area have resumed their meal distribution efforts after a month-long disruption caused by insecurity and food scarcity. Although this represents a small triumph, the overall hunger crisis remains a pressing concern.

As violence and displacement persist across Sudan, urgent calls for humanitarian aid are emanating from communities such as El Geneina and South Khartoum. With critical infrastructure in ruins and resources dwindling, immediate assistance from the international community is vital to avert further deterioration of this crisis.

The renewed violence in Sudan is precipitating a humanitarian disaster as civilians are forced to flee their homes, leading to overcrowded conditions in camps. Health services have significantly collapsed, and there is a dire need for food and protection, especially for vulnerable populations. While community initiatives like the Takaful kitchens offer some relief, the international community must prioritize humanitarian assistance to mitigate the escalating crisis.
