Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has firmly reiterated the organization’s opposition to illegal mining, known as galamsey, urging the government to take immediate and decisive action. During a news conference at the Ghana International Press Centre on March 13, 2025, he stressed the urgency for stricter enforcement of mining regulations, appealing to journalists to contribute actively to the preservation of Ghana’s natural heritage.
Dwumfour highlighted the ongoing destruction of forest reserves, water bodies, and agricultural lands due to illegal mining activities. He expressed concern over the erosion of law and order in mining communities, resulting in human rights abuses and unlawful land possession, while noting the ineffectiveness of government and traditional authorities to address these issues.
Moreover, he praised the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its commitment to combat illegal mining but emphasized the necessity for ongoing vigilance and action. “The GJA commends the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its statement on the attacks on journalists… However, we urge the Ministry not to relent in its efforts to end galamsey,” he stated.
Welcoming President John Dramani Mahama’s assurances regarding illegal mining, Dwumfour expressed the GJA’s willingness to support the government’s initiatives. He urged the President to fulfill his promises to combat galamsey, emphasizing, “Mr. President, the time to act is NOW!!!” He reaffirmed the GJA’s support alongside the Media Coalition in addressing this dire issue.
In addition, Dwumfour underscored the importance of March as Ghana’s National Heritage Month, encouraging media professionals to utilize their platforms in promoting and protecting the country’s cultural identity. He remarked on the role that media plays in shaping national identity, calling for educational efforts to enlighten the public about the rich heritage of Ghana.
