The Honourable Senator Isalean Phillip, Minister of Social Development and Gender Affairs for St. Kitts and Nevis, participated as the ministerial representative for the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States at the Ministerial Roundtable on March 12, 2025, during the Sixty-ninth Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Addressing inquiries regarding advancements required for promoting gender equality amidst an aging population, Minister Phillip emphasized the necessity of prioritizing health outcomes, especially for older men who tend to avoid healthcare despite facing chronic conditions. She stated the importance of educating seniors about estate planning and awareness of financial abuse.
Minister Phillip additionally remarked, “Expanding public understanding and awareness of elder abuse as a common form of domestic violence is needed and enforcing the laws and penalties for relatives and caregivers who abuse elders is necessary for deterrence.” The panel also featured Ministers from countries including South Africa, Estonia, Belgium, and the People’s Republic of China, highlighting the global engagement at CSW69, which includes over 7 Heads of States and 108 High-level representatives focused on women and gender equality issues.
