IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi’s visit to Niger focused on enhancing support for peaceful nuclear technology applications in mining, water management, and cancer care. Meetings with government officials and visits to uranium mines underscored Niger’s geopolitical significance as a leading uranium producer. The IAEA aims to assist in sustainable development and resource management amidst recent political changes in the country.

During a recent two-day visit to Niger, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi engaged in significant discussions with Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine and key officials to bolster support for the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in areas such as mining, water management, and healthcare. High-level meetings with ministers of foreign affairs, mines, and energy focused on prioritizing sustainable development alongside enhancing Niger’s nuclear practices. Grossi visited two uranium mine sites, Compagnie Minière d’Akouta (Cominak) and Société des Mines de l’Aïr (Somaïr), vital to Niger’s economy.

In an IAEA video, Grossi highlighted Niger’s prominent position as a leading uranium producer, stating, “Niger is one of the biggest producers in the world of uranium.” He emphasized the importance of IAEA’s ongoing support amidst the recent political changes in the country. The continuity of IAEA presence is aimed at ensuring safe and secure mining operations while fostering economic development through collaboration. Grossi expressed satisfaction with the professionalism observed during his visit, noting this as a promising start for further cooperation with the country’s mining sector.

Uranium mining in Niger has been active since the 1970s, currently accounting for about 5% of global uranium production. However, instability following a military coup in July 2023 resulted in the withdrawal of operating permits for several projects, including those owned by GoviEx and Orano. Despite this upheaval, negotiations continue as GoviEx has temporarily suspended its arbitration proceedings with Niger.

In addition to mining initiatives, Grossi signed a partnership agreement with Minister of Hydraulics, Sanitation and Environment Maizama Abdoulaye to enhance water resource management in Niger. The agreement includes developing an integrated platform for planning and investments related to water resources, supported by World Bank funding. This collaboration aims to assist Niger in combating severe water scarcity issues exacerbated by the arid climate and population pressures.

The IAEA will extend technical assistance for the establishment of a national water quality laboratory and update existing facilities, fostering local capacity building through training initiatives. Furthermore, the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative aims to augment cancer care availability, with Grossi visiting the IAEA-supported National Cancer Care Centre in Niamey, highlighting the organization’s commitment to improving healthcare access in Niger.

In conclusion, Rafael Mariano Grossi’s visit to Niger underscores the commitment of the IAEA to support the nation in leveraging nuclear technology for economic development and sustainable resource management. With ongoing initiatives in uranium mining, water management, and cancer care, the IAEA aims to ensure the safe use of nuclear techniques in addressing Niger’s pressing challenges. This collaboration represents a significant step towards bolstering Niger’s capabilities in various sectors essential for its future growth.
