The IOM is set to distribute 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Cyclone Jude in Mozambique, which has caused 14 deaths and affected over 100,000 individuals across several provinces. The ongoing rainy season raises concerns for further disasters, making immediate assistance crucial for recovery efforts.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced the distribution of 2,800 emergency kits to victims of tropical cyclone Jude in Zambézia and Nampula provinces, Mozambique. This initiative aims to provide essential aid following the cyclone’s impact, which has reportedly led to significant loss of life and extensive damage across multiple provinces.

Cyclone Jude entered Mozambique early on Monday, resulting in at least 14 fatalities, 60 injuries, and affecting over 100,000 individuals across Tete, Manica, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado provinces. The emergency kits, which contain mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins, are crucial for aiding those impacted by the storm.

IOM emphasized the urgency of assistance needed in the affected regions and continues to assess the local needs. Government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa mentioned that the cyclone has destroyed approximately 30 health facilities. Moreover, nearly 20,000 families are affected, with over 20,000 houses sustained damage; educational institutions have also suffered significant losses.

Mozambique’s rainy season, running from October to April, has been marked by cyclones, including Chido and Dikeledi, which previously struck the northern region, impacting around 736,000 people. Recent data from the National Statistics Institute indicates that extreme weather events have resulted in 1,016 deaths from 2019 to 2023, affecting nearly 4.9 million citizens.

The country remains vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change, facing cyclical floods and droughts that exacerbate existing humanitarian challenges.

The IOM’s distribution of emergency kits is a critical response to the devastating effects of Cyclone Jude, which has inflicted considerable human and infrastructural losses in Mozambique. The ongoing rainy season poses further risks, highlighting the nation’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters. Continued support is essential for the recovery and rehabilitation of affected communities.
