Jordan Lin: A Leader in Sustainability and Climate Action Efforts

Jordan Lin, a graduate from the University of Waterloo’s mechanical engineering program, emerges as a notable advocate in the fight against climate change. Lin’s pursuit of engineering stemmed from a desire to acquire a versatile skill set relevant to various sectors. His commitment to sustainability was further solidified during a co-op term in Tanzania, where he worked on solar energy solutions with a non-profit R&D institute. In his own words, Lin reflects on this transformative experience, stating, “This was an opportunity to see the impacts of climate change firsthand and contribute to on-the-ground solutions.”

Identifying a disconnect among student organizations addressing sustainability, Lin co-founded the Impact Alliance to unify these groups for collaborative efforts. This initiative led to a successful conference that convened over 150 participants, showcasing the importance of leadership in fostering a collaborative atmosphere: “It requires fostering an environment where groups are empowered, and ideas can flourish,” he articulated.

Continuing to advocate for youth involvement in sustainability, Lin co-founded Reimagine17, which has successfully provided paid opportunities for youth to engage in environmental initiatives across Canada. His pride in this organization is evident as he remarks, “I am proud of our legacy which I believe is still felt to this day.”

Currently a sustainability consultant at Arup, Lin develops strategies to promote sustainable practices in the infrastructure sector. He emphasizes the significant role of educational institutions in facilitating the transition to sustainable technologies: “Our institutions provide incredible research, development, and demonstration grounds for these new technologies and methods.”

Lin’s exemplary contributions to sustainability have led to his selection for the prestigious Schwarzman Scholars program, allowing him to join a cohort of global leaders dedicated to change. He expresses his gratitude for this opportunity, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful and energized by this opportunity,” underscoring his commitment to fostering equitable and sustainable solutions.
