The UNFCCC will hold Climate Weeks in 2025, with Panama hosting the first from May 19-23, aimed at enhancing global climate action. This event will align with intergovernmental processes under the UN framework, facilitating discussions on climate finance, adaptation plans, and inclusivity. The Nature Summit will concurrently address green investments, highlighting Panama’s commitment to environmental issues.

The UNFCCC secretariat has announced the resumption of Climate Weeks in 2025, intended to align more closely with intergovernmental processes under the Convention and the Paris Agreement. These events will facilitate the implementation of decisions taken within this framework, building on the success of previous Regional Climate Weeks while adapting to the evolving climate agenda.

Two Climate Weeks are planned for 2025, keeping a global perspective and promoting dialogue, capacity-building, and innovative solutions to advance climate action. The first Climate Week will be hosted in Panama City from May 19 to 23, 2025. Subsequently, the second Climate Week is anticipated to occur in Africa in advance of COP30.

Juan Carlos Navarro, Panama’s Minister of the Environment, emphasized the necessity to shift from fragmented actions to a comprehensive strategy as COP30 approaches. He stated that Climate Week will be a critical intersection for policy and investment, where Panama will unveil its Nature Pledge, integrating climate, biodiversity, and land objectives.

These Climate Weeks will congregate representatives from Parties and non-Party stakeholders and will incorporate various UNFCCC-mandated events, including high-impact policy dialogues that will directly benefit the COP outcomes. This unified approach aims to enhance implementation efficiency and accelerate worldwide climate initiatives, ultimately yielding tangible benefits for economies and communities.

Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, acknowledged Panama’s achievement in becoming carbon-negative and praised its commitment to host the first Climate Week. He noted that this initiative demonstrates Panama’s dedication to propelling global climate action forward.

The framework for Climate Weeks fosters substantive discussions leading into the UN June Climate meetings and COP events, emphasizing the promotion of ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate finance. It will also focus on National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF), and topics such as gender inclusiveness and public information access.

Each Climate Week will include policy discussions, training, capacity-building sessions, and solution-oriented exchanges. Panama will concurrently host the Nature Summit, which aims to accelerate investments in the green and blue transitions, reinforcing the commitment to vital environmental issues.

In summary, Panama will host the inaugural Climate Week of 2025 from May 19 to 23 in Panama City, aiming to enhance global climate initiatives and coordination. With a focus on integrating climate-related goals, this event promises to lay the groundwork for important discussions leading to COP30. The implementation of strategies such as the Nature Pledge, alongside increased ambition for Nationally Determined Contributions, signifies a robust commitment to addressing the urgent climate challenges ahead.
