The M23, supported by Rwanda, has seized rich mineral areas in eastern DRC since 2021, imposing high taxes on resources instead of benefiting the Congolese government. This situation underscores the ongoing exploitation and conflict in the region.

In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), mineral wealth is primarily benefiting the Rwanda-backed M23 group rather than the government. The M23 has claimed substantial areas rich in natural resources following its resurgence in 2021. This region, which has faced prolonged conflict, is now significantly impacted by the armed group imposing high taxes on mineral extraction.

The commercialization of the DRC’s mineral wealth has become a critical issue, as M23 continues to strengthen its control over resource-rich areas. Consequently, the financial benefits that could have supported the Congolese government are instead enriching the armed group, perpetuating instability and conflict in the region.
