Sara Duterte requests to speak with her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, before his initial court appearance at the ICC. She has not contacted him since his transfer to The Hague and hopes the court will permit a delay to discuss legal strategies. Duterte faces charges for crimes against humanity from his drug war.

Sara Duterte, the daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, is requesting permission from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to confer with her father prior to his initial court appearance. Currently located in the Netherlands, Sara noted that she has not been in contact with her father since he was transferred to The Hague on March 12.

Sara expressed her expectations for today, stating, “Our expectations today, number one is that we will be given permission to visit the former president. We are waiting for the papers. We already submitted all the requirements. Next is we are praying and hoping that the court will grant our request to move the initial appearance just so that we can properly sit down with the former president and discuss the legal strategies since we haven’t talked to him yet,” as reported by AFP.

Rodrigo Duterte is currently facing charges of crimes against humanity due to his controversial war on drugs, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of over 6,000 individuals during his administration from 2016 to 2022.

In summary, Sara Duterte’s appeal to speak with her father before his court hearing underscores the challenges faced by families during judicial proceedings. Rodrigo Duterte’s upcoming trial related to his war on drugs highlights significant human rights concerns, making this case particularly sensitive. As the situation develops, attention will focus on the ICC’s response to Sara’s request.
