Wärtsilä is supplying engines for two Paraguayan pusher tugs owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L. The tugs, Decatur Lady and Tendota, will each be installed with three Wärtsilä 20 engines, aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing emissions by 25% by 2035. This project underscores the industry’s shift towards sustainability.

Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply new replacement engines for two inland waterway pusher tugs navigating the rivers of Paraguay. These vessels, belonging to ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., a subsidiary of the agribusiness leader ADM, will undergo engine installations in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The two tugs, namely the Decatur Lady and the Tendota, will each be outfitted with three Wärtsilä 20 engines. Previously delivered to the shipyard this year, the Wärtsilä 20 is a compact and lightweight marine engine known for its fuel versatility and reliable performance in both main engine and genset applications.

The installation of these engines is anticipated to diminish the environmental impact and enhance the operational efficiency of the tugs. ADM aims to lower emissions by 25% by 2035, and the advanced technology of Wärtsilä engines presents a vital opportunity to achieve this objective in South America.

Raul Valdez, logistics director at ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., articulated, “The Wärtsilä engines selected for this project have the fuel flexibility that we seek, especially as we look to the potential of alternative future fuels. At the same time, the project will help us to improve operational reliability and lower our maintenance costs.”

Hanno Schoonman, director of sales for the AMER region at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed enthusiasm regarding the selection of their engines, stating, “We are delighted that Wärtsilä engines have been selected for this important project, which highlights the marine industry’s shift to greater sustainability and increased efficiency. ADM’s vision to be the provider of choice to meet the demand for low-carbon intensity feedstocks is very much in line with Wärtsilä’s own commitment to supporting the industry’s decarbonization efforts.”

In summary, Wärtsilä will provide replacement engines for two Paraguayan pusher tugs, enhancing their efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The project aligns with ADM’s goal to decrease emissions by 25% by 2035. The Wärtsilä 20 engines were chosen for their fuel flexibility and reliable performance, reflecting a broader industry’s commitment to sustainability.
