Amnesty International Demands Justice for Mozambique Protester Shot by Police

Despite his efforts to seek compensation from the Attorney General’s Office and assurances from President Filipe Nyusi regarding investigations, Manhique has yet to receive justice.

It has urged the authorities to promptly hold accountable those police officers responsible for the unlawful arrests and abuses against peaceful protesters.
Khanyo Farisè, the Deputy Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa at Amnesty International, emphasized that the scenario surrounding Inocêncio Manhique reflects a broader issue of impunity among security forces in Mozambique. He pointed out that since last October’s elections, there have been over 300 fatalities during police crackdowns on peaceful demonstrations.
The scrutiny of Mozambique’s security forces has intensified due to their response to gatherings commemorating the late rapper Azagaia, who was known for his criticism of governmental corruption. Amnesty International’s recent statement follows a previous call by Human Rights Watch urging a thorough examination of police actions during Azagaia’s funeral procession, which also involved the use of tear gas.
The peaceful march, attended by more than 400 individuals, was organized in memory of Edson da Luz, known as “Azagaia,” who died two years ago. As an activist noted, the intention of the demonstration was to communicate that “independence is freedom,” reinforcing Azagaia’s legacy as a fervent critic of the ruling authorities through his impactful musical works.
