Ghana Triumphs at Independence Armwrestling Challenge

The Independence Armwrestling Challenge in Accra celebrated Ghana’s independence and highlighted its athletes’ achievements, particularly their success at the 2023 African Games. Ghana secured multiple medals, with standout performances from Grace Minta, Wisdom Abromekeyi, and Joshua Yeboah. The Minister of Sports, Kofi Iddie Adams, celebrated the event’s significance in promoting armwrestling in Ghana.

Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the Independence Armwrestling Challenge conducted at the Center Point Mall in Accra. The event highlighted remarkable competitions between elite athletes from Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, and Togo, celebrating Ghana’s independence while also showcasing the country’s achievement of winning 41 medals at the 2023 African Games.

In the female +80kg category, Ghana’s Grace Minta delivered an outstanding performance, overcoming competitors from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo to secure the gold medal. Her fellow Ghanaian athletes, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah, achieved silver and bronze medals, respectively, completing a clean sweep for Ghana in this weight category.

In the male division, the African Games medalist Wisdom Abromekeyi dominated the 65kg category, winning gold against Daniel Acquah and Benin’s Amoono Stephen. Additionally, Joshua Yeboah, a promising newcomer from Chicken Wing Club, excelled in the 90kg category, decisively defeating all challengers from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, thus marking his significant entry into the sport.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Minister Adams and GAF Vice President Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, alongside former Minister Joseph Cudjoe and MP Dickson Kyere Duah. Other notable attendees included Mr. Willaim Katey, Chief Director of the Ministry, and representatives from various sports organizations across the West African region.

Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of GAF, expressed satisfaction with the event’s success. He stated, “I am thrilled to see the growth of Armwrestling in Ghana and Africa as a whole. This event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes, coaches, and officials.” He praised the Federation’s efforts in hosting a world-class event that attracted top athletes from across the region.

The results for the remaining weight categories included gold, silver, and bronze medals achieved by various athletes from the participating nations. Significant highlights include Marie Rose from Benin winning gold in the women’s 65kg category, and Mohammed Ismael from Togo taking gold in the men’s 90+kg category.

The Independence Armwrestling Challenge provided a platform for Ghanaian athletes to demonstrate their strength and skill, resulting in significant achievements in various categories. Mr. Kofi Adams’ attendance and support, alongside the enthusiastic response from the Armwrestling Federation, underlined the importance of this event in promoting the sport within Ghana and the region.
