Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warns of retaliation against U.S. airstrikes targeting Houthis in Yemen. U.S. President Trump issued a severe ultimatum to the Houthis, aimed at deterring further aggression. The airstrikes have drawn condemnation from Iranian officials, who reject U.S. intervention in Iranian policy and highlight humanitarian concerns in Yemen.

On Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Commander, Hossein Salami, issued a warning stating that any attack on Iran would elicit a retaliatory response. This statement followed U.S. airstrikes targeting Houthi militants in Yemen, as reaffirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats against both the Houthis and Iran. Salami indicated that the Houthis independently determine their strategic actions, emphasizing their autonomy in conflict decisions.

President Trump’s threats included a severe warning to the Houthis to cease their aggressive actions or face catastrophic consequences. He also pointed to Iran’s support for the Houthis, asserting that the U.S. would hold Iran accountable for any continued backing.

In retaliation to the U.S. airstrikes, Iran condemned the actions, labeling them as “barbaric.” Reports indicate that these strikes, aimed at Houthi positions, resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals, including women and children, according to the Houthi-run Ministry of Health. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghery characterized the strikes as a gross violation of international law.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi firmly rejected President Trump’s demands to cease Iranian support for the Houthis, declaring that the U.S. lacks the authority to dictate Iran’s foreign policy. He specifically called attention to the humanitarian crisis that faces Yemeni civilians due to such military actions.

The U.S. airstrikes, which were executed under the direction of President Trump, marked a significant escalation in U.S. military involvement against the Houthis, who maintain a stronghold in Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. Notably, these airstrikes represent the first direct military engagement initiated by the Trump administration since taking office in January 2025.

The backdrop to these developments includes the ongoing Israeli-Gaza conflict, which has influenced the Houthis’ military strategies. Since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, which reportedly resulted in over 61,000 fatalities in Gaza, the Houthis have executed multiple missile and drone attacks targeting maritime vessels in solidarity with Palestinians. This led to intensified military actions by the U.S., UK, and Israel against Houthi installations in Yemen during the prior administration of President Joe Biden.

In summary, Iran has issued a stern warning against U.S. military actions following airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, marking a significant escalation in geopolitical tensions. While the U.S. claims to hold Iran accountable for supporting the Houthis, Iranian officials firmly reject these assertions and condemn the violence. The interplay of regional conflicts, particularly influenced by events in Gaza, continues to shape the actions and rhetoric of all parties involved.
