Iranian President Endorses Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his support for the newly established peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing Iran’s dedication to fostering peace and stability in the region. In a recent phone call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President Pezeshkian congratulated both nations on achieving this significant milestone toward resolving longstanding conflicts.
The peace agreement concluded the nearly four-decade-long strife between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Armenia conceding its territorial claims to Karabakh. This region has historically been a focal point of contention, marked by two significant wars during the past decades, with international recognition favoring Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Karabakh.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei lauded the announcement as a pivotal move towards ensuring a “lasting” peace in the South Caucasus. During discussions, President Pezeshkian highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Iran and Armenia, urging officials to accelerate the implementation of agreements across various sectors.
Prime Minister Pashinyan briefed President Pezeshkian on the completion of the draft for the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations” and expressed hope for the swift signing and enforcement of this treaty. Pashinyan also acknowledged Iran’s constructive role in enhancing bilateral relations and reiterated Armenia’s commitment to fulfilling existing agreements with Iran.
