Iranian President Endorses Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his support for the newly established peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing Iran’s dedication to fostering peace and stability in the region. In a recent phone call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President Pezeshkian congratulated both nations on achieving this significant milestone toward resolving longstanding conflicts.

The peace agreement concluded the nearly four-decade-long strife between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Armenia conceding its territorial claims to Karabakh. This region has historically been a focal point of contention, marked by two significant wars during the past decades, with international recognition favoring Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Karabakh.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei lauded the announcement as a pivotal move towards ensuring a “lasting” peace in the South Caucasus. Pashinyan also acknowledged Iran’s constructive role in enhancing bilateral relations and reiterated Armenia’s commitment to fulfilling existing agreements with Iran.
