The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies has criticized UNSMIL for its neglect regarding recent assaults on Judge Ali Al-Sharif and lawyer Munir Abeid. The association has called for equitable human rights treatment and adherence to UNSMIL’s founding principles, warning it may suspend cooperation if such issues persist. Recent incidents underscore the importance of international support for judicial integrity in Libya.

The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies has expressed concern over the apparent inaction of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) regarding recent violations against judicial members. The association criticized UNSMIL’s Rule of Law Section for its silence on the cases involving Judge Ali Al-Sharif and lawyer Munir Abeid, describing this behavior as neglectful.

In a recent statement, the association urged UNSMIL to ensure equitable treatment in dealing with human rights matters and to issue comprehensive statements rather than selective ones. The association insists that the mission must adhere to its foundational principles and remain committed to human rights and judicial integrity.

The association further emphasized that UNSMIL’s Rule of Law Section is responsible for upholding human rights and the dignity of the judiciary, without influencing the judicial authority’s internal affairs. They indicated a willingness to suspend cooperation with UNSMIL if these principles are not upheld.

On a recent incident, the association reported an assault on Judge Ali Al-Sharif at his residence in Tripoli, leading to his detention by a security agency. He was subsequently released due to the intervention of Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour. Meanwhile, lawyer Munir Abeid is confirmed to have been detained in Benghazi by armed personnel affiliated with the Internal Security Agency, taken to an unofficial detention center without legal procedures.

The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies has formally condemned UNSMIL’s inaction regarding recent assaults on judicial personnel. They have urged for balanced handling of human rights violations and warned of discontinuing cooperation if their principles are not respected. Recent incidents involving Judge Ali Al-Sharif and lawyer Munir Abeid highlight the critical need for robust support from international bodies in the protection of judicial integrity in Libya.
