Libyan Elections Postponed: New Date to be Set Within 30 Days

Libyan elections have been postponed with a new date expected within 30 days as announced by the High National Elections Commission. UN Special Advisor Stephanie Williams emphasizes the need for inclusive elections and support for the political will of registered voters. The UN Secretary-General also stresses the importance of timely elections to ensure democratic stability in Libya.
The recent postponement of Libyan elections has raised significant concerns, prompting the UN envoy to renew commitments toward facilitating the electoral process. Special Advisor Stephanie Williams emphasized the Libyan people’s strong desire to participate in elections to conclude the prolonged transitional period. An inclusive, free, and fair electoral process is crucial, according to Williams, who has been active in Libya since December 12.
The High National Elections Commission announced the inability to hold the presidential elections on December 24, as stipulated in the political roadmap. Citing issues in electoral legislation and candidate eligibility challenges, the Commission requested a new election date from the House of Representatives within 30 days, while also urging for solutions to ongoing electoral conflict.
Williams affirmed her readiness to mediate and work with Libyan institutions to resolve these electoral challenges. She stressed the importance of prioritizing the will of the 2.8 million registered voters and maintaining stability achieved in the past 15 months in Libya. It is essential that current electoral challenges do not hinder progress.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the need for elections to respect the will of the Libyan people, stating that conditions for peaceful electoral processes must be established. He pledged ongoing support to ensure timely presidential and parliamentary elections in a Libyan-led initiative that addresses the remaining challenges.
Additional to her efforts regarding the elections, Williams has actively engaged with various stakeholders to mediate and collaborate. Notably, tangible progress has been observed in Libya since the signing of a ceasefire agreement in October 2020. Williams reported a shift from conflict to dialogue, with improved interactions observed among Libyans, including families previously separated due to conflict being reunited.
The postponement of the Libyan elections highlights significant electoral challenges that must be addressed promptly. The UN remains committed to supporting Libya’s electoral process, underscoring the necessity of respecting the expressed will of the citizens. As Libya strives for political stability and the establishment of democratic institutions, it is imperative that all parties work towards creating the essential conditions for credible elections.
