Nepal Emphasizes Closer Relations with India: A Focus on Trade and Cooperation
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba has announced an initiative to strengthen relations with India through trade and collaboration on global issues. This declaration was made during the Raisina Dialogue, where other leaders, including Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Mongolia’s Ambassador, shared insights on their respective nations’ partnerships with India. The Dialogue serves as a significant platform for global geopolitical discussions.
On March 18, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba announced the country’s intention to strengthen ties with India, particularly through enhanced trade cooperation and collaboration on global challenges. She emphasized Nepal’s focus on establishing closer relationships involving energy trade and the potential legalization of borders. Deuba remarked, “We are focusing on closer relationships, vis a vis trade, especially energy trade and trade of our goods and maybe legalising our borders and working together on global issues also we hope to be working together.”
Arzu Rana Deuba is participating in the prestigious Raisina Dialogue, joined by global leaders, including New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. During the same conference, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon shared insights from a productive meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. She noted active interest from Slovenian companies in the Indian market, stating, “We had a very fruitful discussion. India and Slovenia developing cooperation in the fields of science, innovation, technology, and energy.”
Fajon also highlighted the importance of bilateral discussions encompassing geopolitics, emphasizing India’s role as a significant partner for Slovenia within the European Union. She mentioned the strategic advantage of Slovenia’s North Adriatic port of Koper, which offers the shortest maritime route from Asia to European markets.
Additionally, Ganbold Dambajav, the Ambassador of Mongolia to India, reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Mongolia and India, celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations. He conveyed, “We consider India as our most important neighbour in this region… I am confident that in the future we will have a good and robust economic cooperation.”
The Raisina Dialogue, which commenced on March 17 and is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, serves as India’s premier platform for discussions on geopolitics and geo-economics, focusing on pressing global issues.
