NIGCOMSAT Launches Hackathon Aimed at Empowering Youth in Nigeria

NIGCOMSAT Limited has launched a youth empowerment initiative focusing on the North-West region of Nigeria, including a Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT training to boost tech skills and broadband access. The event, scheduled for April 7-11 in Dutse, aims to engage university students and local innovators, encouraging innovation and reducing youth unemployment.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has launched a youth empowerment initiative aimed at enhancing technological skills in the North-West region of Nigeria. This initiative seeks to improve broadband access in remote areas and includes a Space-Tech Hackathon along with Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training, set to take place in Dutse, Jigawa from April 7 to 11.

The program is specifically designed to engage university students, start-ups, and local innovators from six states: Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Katsina, alongside Jigawa. Participants interested in joining can register through the official link: https://bit.ly/VSAT_JIGAWA.

Previously, NIGCOMSAT conducted a similar event in the North-East region, hosting a Space-Tech Hackathon in Yola, Adamawa State from February 24 to 28. This earlier event, co-hosted with the Adamawa State Government, focused on promoting grassroots innovation in satellite technology with significant economic and social benefits.

NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, emphasized that the upcoming five-day event will provide mentorship and hands-on experience in satellite technology. She stated that the hackathon will enable participants to identify challenges, brainstorm solutions, create prototypes, and benefit from expert mentoring.

The winning team of the hackathon will gain entry into the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025, receiving further support for project development. In addition, 100 youths will partake in specialized training in VSAT installation, which is critical for improving broadband connectivity in underserved communities.

Egerton-Idehen reiterated that the initiative’s ultimate goal is to foster technological innovation, address community needs, and mitigate youth unemployment throughout Nigeria. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the North-West Hackathon and VSAT training will be a collaborative effort between Jigawa State and NIGCOMSAT Ltd.
