The Senate President remarked, “Nigeria and Africa remember Cuba’s sacrifices. The blood of Cuban internationalists was shed for Africa, alongside the blood of Africans, in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid.” He also urged for enhanced bilateral cooperation across trade, education, healthcare, technology, and culture, encouraging both nations to discover new avenues for mutual growth.
Akpabio condemned the United States’ economic embargo on Cuba, labeling it as unjust and a violation of international law. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to supporting Cuba at the United Nations, advocating for the lifting of sanctions detrimental to Cuba’s economy. He stated, “Nigeria has consistently stood in defiance of injustice, casting its vote against the economic blockade imposed on Cuba. Economic embargoes are relics of the past and should have no place in a modern world.”
