Nigeria and Cuba are enhancing their diplomatic and economic relations, emphasizing sectors such as healthcare, education, and trade. This renewed partnership coincides with the 50th anniversary of their formal diplomatic ties, initially established in 1974. Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Cuba as a significant ally, recognizing its historical contributions to Africa’s liberation movements, particularly during the struggles against apartheid in Southern Africa.
During a reception at the State House in Abuja, Shettima expressed pride in the cultural and ancestral connections between the two nations, highlighting that about seventy percent of Cuba’s population with African roots trace their lineage back to Nigeria. He affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to support Cuba in healthcare and vaccine development, stating, “Our hearts and souls are with you. No matter how long the night is, it will give way to the light of the dawn.”
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla acknowledged the longstanding friendship, noting the vital role of African contributions to Cuban development. He stressed that, “Without the support of Africans and Nigeria from the very beginning of the Cuban revolution, we could hardly have survived,” reflecting on their shared history of fighting against colonialism.
Furthermore, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to fostering this relationship and underscored the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral ties. Discussions encompassed various topics, including economic relations, tourism, and technology, further reinforcing their collaborative efforts since 1974.
