President Nangolo Mbumba has decided to conclude his presidency to avoid confusion, upholding the necessity of elections. He emphasized that Namibians must embrace leadership transitions based on lawful procedures and champion women’s leadership roles, particularly with Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah set to become the next president.

President Nangolo Mbumba recently addressed his decision to not extend his presidential term, emphasizing his commitment to avoiding potential confusion within Namibia. During his address at the Olukonda Elcin Parish in his childhood village on Sunday, he noted, “You can’t stay longer if you have not been duly elected,” highlighting the importance of lawful electoral processes.

Mbumba further warned against forcing oneself into the presidency, asserting that such actions could lead to discord as various factions vie for power. He reiterated that Namibia desires a leader who is rightfully elected according to legal procedures.

Mbumba is set to conclude his presidency in four days, with Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the president-elect, scheduled to assume office on Friday, March 21. He expressed support for Nandi-Ndaitwah, denouncing outdated views that women should not lead, stating that gender should not impede leadership in a democratic society.

He underscored the importance of maintaining peace during this transition, referencing that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia has a female president. Mbumba confirmed, “You have already elected her [Nandi-Ndaitwah]. There will be no elections this year or next year.” He anticipates that she will serve a full five-year term, promoting stability and continuity in governance.

Assuming the presidency in February of last year, Mbumba succeeded his close friend, former president Hage Geingob, and has consistently conveyed his intention to serve only the remainder of Geingob’s term while urging citizens to support one another and remain calm during the transition.

In summary, President Nangolo Mbumba has chosen not to extend his term to prevent confusion in Namibia, advocating for lawful leadership transitions. He firmly believes in the necessity of elections and the empowerment of women in leadership positions. With his imminent departure, he assures the nation of a peaceful transfer of power to Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who will serve a full term as the country’s president, thus reinforcing the principles of democracy and equality.
