The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) convened its 43rd General Assembly on March 8-9 in Loma Plata, where Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected for a three-year term as president. This year’s assembly theme was “Guided,” inspired by Romans 8:14.
In his acceptance of the reelection, President Figur expressed gratitude, stating, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour.” He emphasized that despite challenges, “Our God will not abandon us,” referencing Psalm 121 as a source of comfort.
President Figur outlined the difficulties faced by the church in contemporary society, mentioning the deterioration of family values and attacks on Christian beliefs. Nevertheless, he highlighted that the church is thriving and all parishes have pastoral oversight, enabling the continuation of their missions across Paraguay. He reaffirmed their commitment to guiding the faithful under divine grace.
First elected in 2022, President Figur also leads the Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción and serves as the Latin America regional representative on the board of directors for the International Lutheran Council (ILC). His reelection was welcomed by ILC’s General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, who extended blessings for his service both in Paraguay and globally through the ILC.
In addition to the presidential reelection, the assembly conducted elections for other church positions and celebrated the dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata, where President Figur ministers bi-weekly, despite it being 500 kilometers from his residence. The IELP is a member of the International Lutheran Council, a global entity promoting the Lutheran faith based on scripture and confessional commitments.
In summary, Rev. Alceu Alton Figur has been reelected as President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay. The assembly reaffirmed the church’s commitment to faith and community service amidst contemporary challenges. The IELP’s dedication to maintaining strong leadership and expanding missions underscores their ongoing growth and resilience in the face of modern issues.
