CSOs and Labor Unions Urged to Address Mahama’s Mass Worker Dismissals

The CDM criticizes President Mahama’s mass dismissals of workers as reckless and unconstitutional, urging Civil Society Organizations and labor unions to take action. They stress the potential threats to democracy and workers’ rights, calling for collective resistance to safeguard job security.
The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has expressed concern regarding the silence of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and labor unions amidst the government’s recent mass dismissals of Ghanaian workers. The CDM condemned these dismissals, accusing President John Dramani Mahama of executing executive powers recklessly.
In their statement, the CDM called for the reinstatement of those unfairly dismissed and criticized the lack of response from influential organizations like the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and other labor groups whose members have been affected. They emphasized that President Mahama’s recent actions threaten Ghana’s democratic foundations, constitutional integrity, and labor rights.
The CDM noted the dire implications of such mass terminations, describing them as not only legally questionable but also harmful to the socio-economic fabric of the nation. They urged all stakeholders, especially labor unions, to oppose these unconstitutional actions vigorously.
Furthermore, the CDM highlighted that labor unions such as the TUC, Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), and Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) cannot remain passive. They possess the responsibility to safeguard their members from unjust dismissals and advocate against political victimization.
The CDM also cited violations of the 1992 Constitution, claiming that President Mahama’s directive to revoke public sector appointments made after December 7, 2024, undermines constitutional protections against arbitrary dismissals based on political changes. They warned that all public sector workers deserve protection to ensure job security and stability in governance.
The Centre for Democratic Movement has called for action against the recent mass dismissals of workers in Ghana, emphasizing the urgent need for Civil Society Organizations and labor unions to speak out. They have identified President Mahama’s actions as reckless and in violation of the constitutional rights of public sector workers. This situation poses a substantial risk to democracy and labor rights in the country, requiring collective resistance from all stakeholders to protect job security and uphold the rule of law.
