Disruption at ZNLWVA Press Conference Raises Tensions in Bulawayo

The ZNLWVA press conference in Bulawayo was disrupted by unidentified youths claiming the venue for their own gathering. Chairman Ethan Mathibela confirmed police approval for their event. Following the disruption, war veterans continued their address outside, leading to additional tensions. ZNLWVA plans to protest government corruption and demand accountability this Thursday.
The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) held a press conference in Bulawayo, which was unexpectedly interrupted by a group of unidentified youths claiming a reservation for the same venue. These youths, who refused to disclose their identities, identified themselves as being affiliated with Youth Connect. They asserted, “We are not here to provoke anyone, but we are here for our own meeting. We have our own business to attend to, just like you.”
ZNLWVA chairman, Ethan Mathibela, emphasized that they had duly informed the police about the press conference and had received approval. He stated, “We have clearance from the police headquarters. I personally delivered the letter, which was accepted by the Commissioner General. Now, I am seeing these guys here.” Following the disruption, the war veterans transitioned outside to continue their media address under police oversight. During this time, tension escalated as one of the interlopers seized Mathibela’s ZNLWVA branded cap, leading to his removal by police.
In light of the incident, the ZNLWVA has communicated its intention to the police to stage a protest on Thursday. This protest aims to highlight the ongoing economic crisis, insist on government accountability, and advocate for economic freedom while denouncing corruption, tribalism, nepotism, and inadequate governance.
The disruption of the ZNLWVA press conference by unidentified youths has raised concerns regarding order and respect for due processes. ZNLWVA leadership is attempting to assert their rights to peaceful assembly and communication with the press. Furthermore, the planned protest signifies the war veterans’ growing frustration with the government’s handling of economic issues and governance, aiming for a more accountable administration.
