The Greater Tonj region in South Sudan is set to improve its peace and security efforts with the provision of 33 motorbikes to local law enforcement and peacebuilding organizations. This initiative aims to enhance rapid emergency responses and community stability, reflecting a collaborative effort under the Kong Koc project facilitated by various organizations including the United Nations. Local leaders express hope for a peaceful future for their communities.

The Greater Tonj area of South Sudan, known for its intercommunal violence, is receiving a much-needed boost in peace and security efforts with the introduction of 33 motorbikes. Previously, law enforcement and community peacebuilding organizations faced challenges in mobility, hindering their ability to respond effectively to emergencies. The addition of motorized transportation is expected to significantly improve their readiness to tackle security incidents and foster community stability.

Gabriel Dut, a cattle camp leader from Tonj South, emphasized the positive impact of this initiative saying, “These motorbikes will greatly enhance our ability to respond quickly to emergencies, and that is crucial for us to maintain peace in and between our communities.”

This initiative is part of the Kong Koc community-led peacebuilding project, facilitated by the Reconciliation, Stabilization, and Resilience Trust Fund, which includes involvement from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and other UN bodies. Abuok Anei, from the Tonj South Oversight Committee, noted, “We have wasted so much time fighting each other. Now, with this project, we hope that affected families will receive the justice they deserve and, more importantly, that we can resolve our differences peacefully and move towards a future of development.”

The motorbikes were funded by the South Sudan Multi-Partner Trust Fund, marking a significant investment in the region’s peacebuilding efforts. This initiative highlights the importance of community-driven approaches in addressing conflict and enhancing security.

The introduction of motorbikes in the Greater Tonj area signifies a crucial step towards enhancing peace and security in a region plagued by intercommunal violence. Both local leaders and community organizations express optimism about the potential for resolving conflicts peacefully and ensuring justice for affected families. This initiative, part of a broader peacebuilding project, underscores the vital role of effective mobility in proactive law enforcement and community development.
