Intensifying Clashes in Sudan as Military Reinforcements Join Fight Against RSF

Intense clashes in Khartoum, Sudan, are escalating as army reinforcements join the fight against the RSF, which controls the presidential palace. The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement nationwide. The humanitarian crisis is severe, with millions affected, while the war has effectively split the nation between army and RSF control.
Fierce clashes are intensifying in Khartoum, Sudan, as the national army deploys reinforcements from the south. These troops aim to regain control of the presidential palace, which remains held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Military spokesman General Nabil Abdullah reported that the Armoured Corps joined forces with local units after recapturing a hospital previously under RSF control.
In a recent video, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, known as Hemedti, asserted his troops would not abandon the Republican Palace. Hemedti threateningly indicated the potential expansion of the conflict towards Blue Nile State and eastern Sudan, where the government has relocated its administrative capital, promising his forces will achieve victory.
The violence has resulted in civilian casualties, with shelling by the RSF claiming the lives of six individuals, including two children, in Omdurman. Reports indicate that army forces are advancing towards the presidential palace, which the RSF has occupied since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023, leading to widespread death and displacement across the nation.
The ongoing conflict has created one of the most critical humanitarian crises globally, with the African Union labeling it the world’s worst. In Khartoum alone, around 3.5 million individuals have been displaced due to the violence, according to the United Nations. Meanwhile, in El-Obeid, more casualties were reported from RSF shelling on residential areas.
The civil conflict has effectively partitioned Sudan, with the RSF maintaining control over much of Darfur and parts of the south, while the army governs the northern and eastern regions. Significant military advances have been made recently, with the army poised to reclaim the capital fully. Nonetheless, the RSF has recently established a coalition aimed at forming a parallel government to challenge the authority of the army in Port Sudan, deepening the crisis further.
The ongoing clashes in Sudan between the army and RSF have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, underpinning a dire humanitarian crisis. With the RSF holding strategic positions and the military forces invigorating their efforts to regain control, the situation continues to deteriorate. Armed confrontations have also expanded to other regions, signifying a broader conflict that may affect stability in the neighboring areas as well.
