The mine, owned by African Rainbow Capital Investments headed by billionaire Patrice Motsepe, has been embroiled in legal disputes regarding its environmental impact on the nearby Langebaan Lagoon and aquifer which pose significant ecological risks.
The WWF’s legal action targets South Africa’s Environment Minister, Dion George, challenging his decision to dismiss appeals for an environmental offset exemption related to the mine’s operations. Kropz, responsible for the mine and 90% owned by African Rainbow, was cited in the lawsuit due to its proposed land donation aimed at offsetting environmental damage, which was rejected in 2021.
In its March 13 High Court filing, the WWF asserted that “the environment, and therefore the public at large, has suffered prejudice from the unconscionable delays in the implementation of the offset requirements.” Kropz has acknowledged the ongoing legal challenges and is reviewing its position regarding future operations.
Since acquiring Elandsfontein in 2010, Kropz has encountered various obstacles, including technical difficulties and environmental resistance, affecting the mine’s development timeline. Recent updates indicated a revised mineral resource estimate under JORC compliance, noting an improvement in declared reserve tonnes but a decline in overall resource quality as additional drilling clarified deposit grades.
Moreover, South African coal and iron ore exporters have announced plans to establish multibillion-rand agreements with Transnet to enhance rail infrastructure and increase cargo shipments, indicating broader developments in South Africa’s mining sector.
